In Summer 09, SDSU offered over 20 fully online undergraduate courses. With support from both Instructional Technology Services (ITS) and Course Design Institute (CDI), this initiative of moving high-demand classes online was a milestone for SDSU. In order to help faculty members improve their online courses, it is important to gather feedback from students about the success of their course design and online teaching so as to inform future revisions of the course, and to enable sharing of effective practices in online course design.

fevatools was thus conceived to meet this goal. It is a collection of assessment approaches and tools for gathering and analyzing data on hybrid and online course effectiveness. Faculty members will find fevatools useful in helping them select and implement specific evaluation tools which will provide relevant feedback based on their course design approach.

Page features

When browsing fevatools, visitors should note these features on the following wiki pages:

fevatools is a protected wiki that only allows edits and changes by its members. When browsing, visitors should note the following:
  • Quick links (top left corner): This space allows all visitors, unless stated otherwise, to perform the following:

  • Side navigation bar (left)
    : This area contains quick links to the following:
    • Home page.
    • Tool list: Summary of all tools in fevatools.
    • About fevatools: Information on fevatools.
    • All tools, organized into various categories.
    • Associated SDSU websites.
    • Higher Education social networks.
    • RSS to relevant feeds on course redesign and evaluation.
    • Relevant Bibliography.



  • Top navigation bar: The functions include:
    • Title: List the title of the wiki page.
    • Page: Provide information about the current page. Only fevatools members can make edits and changes to the page.
    • Discussion: List discussion threads of the current page. fevatools is set to allow members of Wikispaces and fevatools to post messages. Non-members will have to register before they can post messages.
    • History: List all dated changes made to the current page.
    • Notify Me: Provide notification service on changes made to the current page. This service is available to members of Wikispaces and fevatools.

  • Advertisements (right)
    : The advertisements are part of the basic and free plan in Wikispaces. To remove these advertisements, fevatools will have to be upgraded to a paid plan. Alternatively, members can download relevant browser plug-ins to remove these advertisements.

Site management & maintenance

Managing fevatools. The appointed administrator should be given the Organizer status so as to perform the following:
  • Access all sections of the wiki through Manage Wiki. This is the area to:
    • Manipulate content features: Manage pages and files as well as create templates and tags.
    • Configure user rights and permission: Manage wiki membership, including setting of permission.
    • Customize interface settings: Configure the look and feel of the wiki and setting of wiki domain name and title.
    • Utilize tools associated with Wikispaces: Track wiki modifications and statistics, monitor space usage, etc.
  • Moderate discussion for all pages and content uploaded to the wiki.

Maintaining the wiki. For maintenance of this wiki, the appointed administrator should be cognizant with the following when using Wikispaces:
  • Edit using both visual and text editor. Basic and advanced editing features can be found under the Help section. Common features used are:
    • Text formatting.
    • Creating hyperlinks.
    • Inserting images and files.
    • Embed videos.
    • Creating tables.
    • Wiki text (text markup when editing in text editor).
  • Basic html coding. This is required for inserting html codes to hyperlink text/images/files to open in another browser tab/window. To do this:


    • Step 1: Go into Editor mode, either visual or text (see above image).
    • Step 2: Click on the widgets icon (orange circle).
    • Step 3: Select other HTML.
    • Step 4: Input html codes.
    • Step 5: Click Save to insert codes on the wiki page.

Designers

Barbara Berkovich is a Master's student in the Educational Technology (EDTEC) program at San Diego State University. She is currently working for the National Tuberculosis Curriculum Consortium developing online multimedia instructional materials for medical students. She's also spent many years working as a web designer, systems analyst and application developer. Current interests include best practices in online course design, and course evaluation.

Lennon Tan is currently a graduate student in the Masters program with a concentration in Educational Technology at San Diego State University. He is interested in using social software and web 2.0 technologies to support learning systems specifically designing and tailoring the requirements within the military environment. He has been a professional military officer with the Singapore Armed Forces since 2001 and will be designing and developing military instructional and training systems upon graduation in the Spring of 2010.

Acknowledgment. The designers would like to credit the creation of fevatools to Drs. Jim Julius, Mark Laumakis, and Minjuan Wang for their expert advice. This wiki would not have been completed without their guidance.
