Introduction

Created by the Texas Center for Educational Technology, DELES is one of the many evaluation tools under its Instrument Library that evaluates the quality of learning environment within the context of distance education.

What are the main features?

The key characteristics of this tool include:
  • A 42-item multiple choice questionnaire that is administered and submitted through the web.
  • Gathers perception on (1) interaction between the students and instructor, (2) interaction among students, (3) learning experience during and outside class, and (4) distance education.

How do I implement it?

DELES serves primarily the Texas Center for Educational Technology region. Permission is required to use this instrument. The website, however, provide access to the web-based parallel survey.

What does it measure?

Users respond to the questions based on their perception on a 5-item Likert scale (strongly agree, agree, neither agree nor disagree, disagree, strongly disagree). Some of the sample questions in the survey are listed as follow:
  • Interaction between the students and instructor:
    • If I have an inquiry, the instructor finds time to respond.
    • It is easy to contact the instructor.
  • Perception on distance education:
    • Distance education is worth my time.
    • I would enjoy my education more if all my classes were by distance.
