Introduction

Developed by Dr. Richard M. Felder and Barbara A. Soloman of North Carolina State University (NCSU), ILS is an online resource that includes a questionnaire for understanding individual learning preference on four dimensions - Active/Reflective, Sensing/Intuitive, Visual/Verbal, and Sequential/Global, that was first formulated by Dr. Richard M. Felder and Dr. Linda K. Silverman. The website also contains additional articles and references for a more detailed review.

What are the main features?

The key characteristics are:
  • A 44-item questionnaire that can be submitted and automatically scored on the Web.
  • A Frequently-Asked-Questions section on using the questionnaire.
  • Descriptions of learning styles.
  • Availability of scoring sheet for analysis.

How do I implement it?

The questionnaire can be administered online or on paper. Scoring sheet is available for analysis of group results. The creators and NCSU have granted permission to use this instrument without cost or restrictions for educational purposes.

What does it measure?

The questionnaire measures the learning preference of the respondent by reporting the scores, on a scale of 1 to 11, corresponding to the four different learning styles (Active/Reflective, Sensing and Intuitive, Visual and Verbal, Sequential and Global). For example, a score of 1-3 on the Active/Reflective indicates a balanced preference in that learning dimension.
