Introduction

One-minute paper is an evaluation technique that can be administered easily in small and large classes to gather qualitative feedback from students usually at the beginning or at the end of a lesson. It focus primarily on students' learning progress with respect to their reaction to instruction, course materials, and learning activities.

What are the main features?

The key characteristics of this technique include:
  • Provides immediate feedback to instructor to improve teaching and learning.
  • Encourages active student participation.
  • Allows students to compare themselves with other students.
  • It requires very little time and logistics.

How do I implement it?

First, construct one or two open-ended questions before the class starts. Next, plan time either in the beginning or at the end of the lesson to present the questions and get students to answer them. Lastly, gather the responses and analyze key findings.

What does it measure?

This tool provides the instructor with a means to gauge the learning progress of the students over time and help them articulate their thinking and understanding. Some sample questions are listed as follow:
  • What was the most important (significant, crucial) thing you learned in today‚Äôs class?
  • What question did I ask students today that helped you the most? The least?
  • What did you learn today that you will use or apply after graduating?
